The Not So Well-Known Benefits Of Lolita Blue & Gold Macaw

Lolita the Blue and Gold Macaw

The blue-and gold macaw is an incredibly beautiful bird. Its stunning beauty is well-known. Its friendly personality makes it a wonderful companion for families. It is also excellent in its interactions and quickly master new words and tricks.

Our own blue-and-gold macaw, Pteri, can say hello to apple, water and more. These birds can live for more than 50 years.

Lolita’s Personality

Macaws are great companion birds. They are smart and affectionate. These birds are ideally suited to families with a range of members. They can be bored quickly and will find ways to entertain themselves when their owners aren't engaged with them often enough. If they aren't socialized properly, macaws can become aggressive and can even bite. It is important that boundaries are clearly defined to ensure that the macaw doesn't feel threatened.

In general, Blue and Gold Macaws are energetic birds that enjoy playing, climbing and play. They require 2 to 3 hours each day in their cages to get physical exercise and mental stimulation. They love playing games as well as listening to music and learning new tricks. They love visiting playgrounds and parks as much as hiking, local eateries and bars. Apart from being a great pet, they are also great pets for children.

Despite their adoring appearance they are loud and can be a distraction to those who live close by. They can be heard making high-pitched screech-calls and ear-piercing calls, which could be a problem in condominiums and apartments, or in close proximity to children who might be scared by their roar.

Another intriguing characteristic of this particular species is that it is monomorphic meaning males and females are difficult to differentiate. Because of this the only way to determine sex is via DNA testing. Once the bird's sex is known and breeding can begin, breeding can commence.

Blue and Gold Macaws, like all pets, require training to learn commands and phrases. It is not an easy process, and it's important that the owner is patient and realizes that this is not an undertaking to be taken lightly. Positive reinforcement can accelerate the process and help correct any issues with behavior.

Lolita's care

For a long time activists have been calling for the release of Lolita from performing tricks at Miami Seaquarium and relocation to an open sea pen. After the 1993 hit movie Free Willy stirred public outrage for orca Keiko's return to the wild, marine biologists hoped Lolita might suffer the same fate. Unfortunately, she never got the chance to return to sea.

The people who are Lolita's captors – the Dolphin Company - have ignored veterinary advice and continue to put her in danger. They cause harm to her health by forcing her to perform for tourists. They overexert her with high-speed circle and head-first dives, exposing her to chlorine and cause her to lose weight. They also place her in a tank that is one-and-a-half times smaller than her natural habitat.

In 2022, a new owner of Miami Seaquarium, who calls Lolita a relative of theirs, promised to work on a plan with a group of Lolita supporters, known as Friends of Toki, and the Lummi Tribe, to move her eventually to open water. The plan included a sanctuary pen in Washington's westcoast, where she could live for the remaining days and receive human care and be monitored by scientists. The sanctuary pen will be hundreds of times larger than her Miami home and surrounded by the ocean itself, not an actual concrete tank.

If the plan was successful, Lolita (also called Tokitae or Toki) could be alive. In the wild killer whales are extremely social animals that bond with family members until they die. Lolita who has been alone at Seaquarium in a secluded area for over 40 years, is being released into the wild. The nation's most active activists, including Ric O'Barry (former Flipper trainer), Empty The Tanks and Orca Network have demanded her to retire from Seaquarium's stage and eventual release into the wild.

Lolita's Diet

A balanced diet is vital for the health of a blue and gold macaw. These beautiful birds require high-quality food and plenty of fresh vegetables, fruits, and whole grains. In captivity, a well-fed macaw can expect to live for up to 60 years. Additionally, this magnificent bird requires plenty of room to fly and exercise.

A macaw with gold and blue eyes can be a charming friend that is also quite intelligent. They are known for their ability to learn new tricks and vocabulary quickly. This bird is perfect for those just beginning their journey with an avian companionship.

This bird is also very social and will bond easily with her family members. Macaws with gold and blue eyes are known to have loud vocalizations including "flock call" as a part of their natural behavior. They can also squabble and chew on their food at times, especially when they are angry or bored. It is important for prospective pet owners to be aware that this kind of behavior is normal and must be expected.

The Miami Seaquarium has released a series of updates on Lolita's health, and her status but there are still questions. Some experts, such as Akromas who was the one who trained or was in charge of the care of Lolita at some point, have voiced concerns about her diet. According to the latest update on the Friends of Lolita site, she consumes 115 pounds of salmon a day, as well as capelin, herring and squid.

The Miami Seaquarium has been criticized for the quality of the food they feed their killer whales, specifically Lolita. The 57-year-old orca was rescued from Puget Sound in 1970, and even though the species is threatened in the wild, she is in an aquarium that some consider too small for her.

Lolita's Health

Lolita is gorgeous, but her health is declining. Animal welfare groups have expressed concern about her and would like to see her released back into the wild. Lolita is a resident of the Miami Seaquarium since 1970 and performed as a tourist attraction for decades. She has been fighting chronic illnesses and an infection that left her in a fragile state.

The Dolphin Company, which now owns the Miami Seaquarium and is owned by the Dolphin Company has not provided any information regarding the condition of Lolita. Friends of Toki, a non-profit group, has posted monthly updates on her health and well being on their website. These updates reveal that Toki is aging quickly and that her health has deteriorated.

Since her captor doesn't need to reveal this information, it is unclear what health issue the orca is suffering from. However, a repository of necropsies taken from Sea World that was created by the Orca Project shows that kidney disease is a common cause in the deaths of orcas in captivity.

Despite the health issues that continue to plague of Lolita, many people are hopeful that she may be closer than ever to a wild life. The new owner of the Seaquarium has expressed a commitment to removing the whale of her tank and into her home waters in the Pacific.

The move comes after years of public pressure, including from PETA and PETA, which demanded that the Miami Seaquarium release Lolita into a sanctuary at sea in which she can swim in the ocean and perhaps even reunite with the orca thought to be her mother. Unfortunately the plans came too late for the beloved whale, who died on Friday of what was believed to be a kidney issue.
